Der englische Begriff "Sandstorm" bezeichnet im Deutschen einen Sandsturm.

Die Bedeutung des englischen Begriffes "Sandstorm" ist mit dem deutschen gleichbedeutend und beschreibt einen starken Wind, der Sand mit sich führt. En Sandstorm ist meist sehr heiß, wirbelt den Sand zunächst hoch auf und transportiert ihn dann oftmals über längere Distanzen. Dabei ist die zurückgelegte Strecke abhängig von der Partikelgröße der Sandkörner.

Sandsturm versus Staubsturm

Oftmals werden Sand- und Staubsturm in einem Atemzug genannt und als gleich angesehen. Dem ist jedoch nicht so, denn es gibt einen wesentlichen Unterschied:
Während bei einem echten Sandsturm (Sandstorm) der Sand lediglich einige Zentimeter, bis maximal zwei Meter über den Boden getrieben wird, ragt bei einem Staubsturm (Duststorm) die dunkle Staubwolke kilometerweit in die Höhe.

Sandstorm und Klimawandel

Sandstürme treten häufig in Wüstenregionen der Erde auf. Fortschreitende Desertifikation, Klimawandel und Rodungen der Wälder gelten unter anderem als Ursachen für die zunehmende Häufigkeit von Sandstürmen (Sandstorms). Der Erosionsschutz ist häufig zerstört, den Sandsturm aufhaltende bzw. hemmende Hindernisse fehlen und lassen den Wind ungehindert passieren.
